Economic reform, openness, and Vietnam's entry into ASEAN
Article Abstract:
Vietnam's entry into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in July 1995 will help to consolidate its economic reform and reinforce its policy of openness. Vietnam's economy will become complementary to the developed ASEAN economies with the expansion of trade with ASEAN countries. Vietnam's membership in ASEAN will also consolidate macroeconomic management and liberalize foreign trade and investment. The ASEAN partners will help Vietnam's economy if Vietnam meets its tariff reduction schedules. Problems of managing the state firms can be solved by allowing privatization.

Article Abstract:
H.E. Singh thinks that potential for ASEAN investment lies in areas of tourism, infrastructural development, natural resources exploitation, and manufacturing. Vietnam's foreign trade in the context of ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region: a gravity approach
Article Abstract:
Vietnam's trade with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region has increased since the early 1990s. A gravity model, studying Vietnam's interregional trade, reveals that Vietnam has turned from being an under-performer in 1989 to average in 1994. Since 1990, ASEAN countries account for 20% to 45% of Vietnam's exports, and 30% to 50% of its imports. Vietnam's trade with 17 countries of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) rose from $1,038 million in 1989 to $8,833 in 1994.
