ASEAN, labour standards and international trade
Article Abstract:
The Assn of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) opposes the International Labor Organization's (ILO) mandate requiring the inclusion of labor standards in international trade agreements. The ILO demands the prohibition of all forms of forced labor and discrimination in employment. The ILO asserts that these standards uphold basic human rights. On the other hand, the ASEAN believes that these standards will derail the economic performance of developing countries in the global trading market. The formation of an independent body to consider these issues is recommended.

ASEAN: an untapped export market for Finland and Sweden?
Article Abstract:
There have been high growth rates among member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and foreign investors have taken an interest in ASEAN, which is also seen as a potential market. Exports to ASEAN from Finland and Sweden have increased, during the late 1980s and beginning of the 1990s, with Finland exporting less than Sweden. ASEAN is a key target market, but there are limits to the extent to which export growth can be increased. This market is important for high-tech exports, so aggregate data may underestimate the importance of the market.
