Hollywood for the 21st century: global competition for critical mass in image markets
Article Abstract:
The Hollywood, CA, motion picture industry has undergone restructuring in response to a more competitive and extensive market. In the 1920s the industry was characterized by craftsmanship which shifted to mass production techniques following Fordism trends in the 1940s. The industry was forced to divest its cinema chains in 1940 due to a Supreme Court anti-trust ruling. The subsequent reorganization of the industry involved vertical disintegration and diversification into multi-media operations in different locales. The restructuring of Hollywood is expected to continue in the light of globalization and the rise of cinema as part of national culture.

The use of unit values to discriminate between price and quality competition
Article Abstract:
A complementary indicator to assess the competitive position of industries is proposed, and it is argued that the unit value is a good indicator of price competitiveness for some industry, and a useful indicator of the non-price or quality competitiveness for other industries. The indicator was applied to the German economy and the results compared with other indicators of dynamic competitiveness. The usefulness of unit values for tentative assessment of the competitiveness of the German economy is demonstrated.
