Family background, education and employment in urban Ethiopia
Article Abstract:
Analysis of results of a survey of Ethiopian youths whose ages range between 15 and 29 years is undertaken to find out the effect of family background on employment and earnings. Results show that there is indeed a positive correlation between the two. In Ethiopia, particularly, entry into the public sector, which was the aim of most educated individuals, was largely determined by a father's influence and connections. Entry into lower-salaried jobs in the private sector, on the other hand, was not influenced by family background.

The effect of unemployment benefits on the probability of re-employment in Poland
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the influence of unemployment benefits on the duration of unemployment in Poland. Labor Force Surveys between 1994 to 1996 were utilized to carry out the analysis. In addition, nonparametric and semiparametric estimation processes were used. Results indicated that unemployment benefits minimize the probability of leaving unemployment during the first six-nine months. Moreover, the probability of entering employment significantly increased before the depletion of such benefits.

Education, economic growth, and brain drain
Article Abstract:
A two-sector overlapping-generations model of endogenous growth is developed to examine the effects of brain drain on economic development, education, welfare and income distribution. The model analyzes the dynamic and welfare effects of brain drain. The findings indicate that brain drain has negative effects on the growth rate of the economy and on the non-emigrants through the static income-distributional effects and the dynamic damage on economic development and human capital buildup.
