Article Abstract:
Research indicates that the completion of the Eastern enlargement, the 1995 enlargement, and the Single Market each show a positive and significant anticipation effect in the interim between the announcement and formal integration establishment. After establishment, however, no further positive impacts are noted.

Foreign direct investment has increased multinational corporation activity in Mexico. This has promoted exports, but has also increased imports and displaced local firms, resulting in limitations on the nation's economic development via balance of payments constraint.
