Globalisation of the economy and the nation state
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the welfare implications of globalization and changes in policy options resulting from a more integrated world economy. The quantitative significance of globalization was examined, including speculations on its causes. Literature on tax compensation were also analyzed. In addition, the determinants of government growth were examined to evaluate the effects of globalization on government spending. Results indicated that globalization does not support any retrenchment of the welfare state.

Globalisation and the effects of national versus international competition on the labour market: theory and evidence from Belgian firm level data
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the influence of a reduction in product market monopoly power on the domestic sectoral labor market during a labor union's negotiation with a domestic firm about salary levels. Results indicated the importance of the geographical location of competition in the presence of labor unions and endogenous wage formation. Findings also showed that union bargaining power was inversely correlated with changes in the employment of blue collar workers.
