Globalisation, social conflict and economic growth
Article Abstract:
The import substituting industrialisation (ISI) method of development, which was advocated by economist Raul Prebisch, has been criticized and dismissed by neoclassical economists in the 1970s. The protectionist principles of ISI have been seen as significant contributing factors to the demise of economies which subscribed to it. However, closer examination of ISI in Latin American countries reveals the method to have little connection with economic decline. On the contrary, ISI was shown to have contributed to unparalleled economic growth in the countries within a 20-year period.
