Article Abstract:
Institutional developments in the European Parliament in 1996 are evaluated. These developments were dominated by the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) convened in March 1996. Any agreements on any IGC issue will be reached after the UK general election in May 1997. Other major institutional developments evaluated were the preparations for the European Monetary Union and the work done by the EU.

An overview is presented on the organizational procedures of the European Union, and how these have changed due to the implementation of the Treaty on European Union and the prospective addition of countries which are members of the European Free Trade Association. Topics include monetary union, social policy and protocol, and provisions regarding committees of inquiry and courts of justice.

Article Abstract:
Numerous developments in the European Union (EU) regarding membership and regulations have occurred in 1995. The year marked the entry of Sweden, Austria and Finland to the group. In the same year, new positions and joint actions were issued to conform EU procedures to the Maastricht Treaty. Preparations are also being made for the holding of the 1996 Intergovernmental Conference.
