Governance and institutions: a transitional year
Article Abstract:
Ratification of the Amsterdam Treaty and the implementation of the European Monetary Union created substantial impact not only on the economy of member nations but on their political landscape as well. These two vital events laid the foundation for a new governance scheme and institutional development platform for member states. In Germany, for instance, these events led to a heightened concern over domestic affairs, which in turn, proved beneficial for the country's long-term growth.

Monetary and fiscal policy in Euroland
Article Abstract:
Eleven European countries have started to use the euro as their common currency, which has been regulated by the European Central Bank. At the same time, the Stability and Growth Pact was formulated to limit the ability of national governments to run excessive fiscal deficits. The refusal of the UK to convert their currency was discussed. It was suggested that the advantages of the euro are more than its dangers and that the UK may benefit in joining Euroland countries.

National labour market institutions and the European economic and monetary integration process
Article Abstract:
The integration of labor market institutions in the countries composing the EU is a very important determinant of the long-term success of a European Monetary Union. Unfortunately, current labor market policies are not conducive to integration because of the existence of divergent wage formation systems. Unemployment may result if this problem is not resolved.
