The UK ice cream market amounted to 988 million pounds sterling in 1999, of which 376 million pounds sterling was accounted for by impulse buys. The ice cream market is dominated by chocolate snacks with 29% of sales, followed by the children's segment with 22.9% and refreshment sales, with 10.6%. The impulse market is led by Wall's with a 69% value share, with Nestle having a 10.5% share and Mars with 9%. The impulse ice cream market is expected to remain at 376 million pounds sterling in 2000, at current prices, rising to 382 million pounds sterling by 2004.

The rise is mainly due to intense marketing activity by the major players who continue to launch new brands and extensions to existing lines. Some 48.4% of the take-home ice cream market is accounted for by multipacks, with value sales rising by some 36.4% between 1995 and 1999. The UK retail take-home market is set to reach 673 million pounds sterling in 2000, rising to 834 million pounds sterling in 2004, at constant prices.

The U.K. market for impulse ice cream is governed mainly by the weather, with the scorching summer of 1995 rocketing sales to around 505 million pounds sterling, up 20% from 1994. The 1996 market is not expected to be as spectacular, but sales should be 18% above those in 1991. Unilever subsidiary Wall's dominates the impulse ice cream market, accounting for 63% of all value sales in 1995, followed by Mars and Nestle Lyons Maid with a combined 27% share. It is forecast that the impulse ice cream market will reach 554 million pounds sterling by 2000, at current prices.
