Intertemporal dimensions of international economic adjustment: evidence from the Franco-Prussian war indemnity
Article Abstract:
The Franco-Prussian war indemnity was studied in the investigation of the intertemporal aspects of international transfer payments and economic adjustment. The reparation payments ordered to be made by France to Germany in 1871 amounted to 25% of the gross national product of France, an unusually large sum. Research indicates that this caused French savings and German investment to increase, while causing French investment and German savings to decline. Consumption-smoothing occurred in both countries as they overreacted to the transfer.

Patents, R&D, and invention potential: international evidence
Article Abstract:
The ratio of the number of patented inventions to real R&D expenditures has declined in several countries between the 1960s and the 1990s, as has the ratio of the number of patented inventions to the number of scientists and engineers (S&E) working on R&D. The patent/S&E ratio was 55% of the 1969-70 levels in the US in 1990 and 40% in France. The factors that affect the ratio of patents to S&E include the propensity to patent, invention-demand factors and invention potential factors.

Economic effects of quality regulations in the day-care industry
Article Abstract:
The impact of quality regulations in the day care industry was examined using data from the 1990 National Child Care Survey. Regulations exhibited a binding effect on the market equilibrium price, quality and hours of care and carried spillover effects to industry competitors. These results are limited since reduced-form equations were applied and do not consider the regulatory impact on supply and demand behavior.
