Article Abstract:
The small business inventories for the actual last three months and planned for next three months were studied from January 1986 to December 2003. It was reported that inventory decumulation for the 33rd consecutive month and the current inventory stocks deteriorated in December despite a solid season and heavy interest in adding to stocks.

The actual inventory changes increased to a seasonally adjusted net 1 percent up two points from February 2004 with a seasonally adjusted 3 percent reporting inventory satisfaction, up 2 points. Plans to add to inventories in the next three to six months increased 3 points to a seasonally adjusted net 5 percent.

The net percent of owners reporting inventory accumulation eased one point to minus 2 percent in September 2003. Further, more owners reduced stocks than added to them and NFIB owners have reported thirty consecutive months of inventory decumulation.
