Ireland's Problems Don't Get Less, They Just Do Become Clearer
Article Abstract:
Four leading bishops of the Roman Catholic church were recently questioned by politicians representing Ireland's four major nationalist political parties on the church's position regarding non-catholics in Northern Ireland who may in the future be a part of the Irish republic. The senior bishop stated that the present Irish constitution could not be imposed on Northern Ireland Unionists. The remarks of the bishop did not receive British publicity. Irish unity may depend on decreasing the political power of the Roman Catholic Church in the republic. The New Ireland Forum may help in this goal, as well as acheiving some political consolidations. Political initiatives which the forum may propose are outlined. Forum representatives wish to deal directly with the British. A forum government agreement may be presented to Reagan during his St. Patrick's Day visit to Ireland.
