It's a slow boat to China
Article Abstract:
Kaohsiung, a Taiwan port management group, has plans to provide the most efficient and busiest shipping port in the world. For the first time since World War II ships are able to sail directly between Taiwan and China. An offshore area of the port is already receiving Chinese cargo, if the ships are registered in a third country. China has designed the ports of Xiamen and Fuzhou as ports of entry for Taiwan.

Central to Asian machinery trade
Article Abstract:
The Subic Bay meeting of APEC highlighted Japan's role in Asia-Pacific and intra-Asian trade. Some question whether Japan is committed to the region's growth, or a mere beneficiary. Japan remains the region's top producer of industrial machinery. However, many complain that Japan should provide more leadership by buying more local supplies and investing in technology transfers and manufacturing.

Exports inexorably up
Article Abstract:
The International Monetary Fund reported that Thailand's merchandise exports between 1989 and 1995 increased by 2.8 fold. This figure is similar to China's economic growth. Japan's exports grew by one half of this figure, while Malaysia managed to beat it with a 2.95-times increase. Experts believe the increase is as a result of advances in technology and primary product exports.
