Lager
Article Abstract:
The UK market for lager reached 7.55 billion pounds sterling in 1993, with volume sales totalling 3.02 billion lt. Lager accounts for around 52% of the total UK beer market. There is a trend towards off-licence sales, helped by the ageing population and a fall in pub visiting. Draught lager had a 58% volume share of the total lager market in 1993. Imports have increased, with Germany being the main supplier, although French lagers are growing strongly in popularity. Lager is forecast to increase its share of the beer market and is expected to be worth 7.39 billion pounds sterling by 1998.

Off trade lager
Article Abstract:
Volume sales of lager for home consumption in the UK increased by 23% in between 1992 and 1996. The 6% decrease in the volume of on-trade in the same period reflects the trend away from pub visiting towards home drinking. Lager drinkers are predominantly young males, but premium lagers appeal to more women and older drinkers, and the market share of premium lagers continues to increase. The market is mature and crowded. The increasing popularity of premium brands, and increasing concentration in the industry, may lead to the loss of some of lower profile, economy brands.

On-trade lager
Article Abstract:
Lager is gaining an increasing proportion of total sales in the beer market, helped by the growth in the take home trade. The on trade market, for instance pubs, restaurants and clubs, is expected to continue to decline, and market factors include shifts in age profile of the adult population, the decline in the number of pubs and the widespread reluctance to drink and drive. Companies and brands, and advertising and promotion for lager is also discussed.
