Micros Begin to Penetrate More Deeply in Britain
Article Abstract:
The results of a survey taken by the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) in Great Britain show the patterns emerging in the use of microprocessors by manufacturers. In 1983, almost half of British manufacturers had introduced micros into their products or production processes. There appears to be a lag in product applications. Product applications are concentrated in electrical and mechanical engineering and vehicle industries. Process use of micros is greatly widespread, and often very simple. Process applications in manufacturing are often related to cutting costs. The survey indicates that a company's use of micros expands after their initial introduction. Between 1981-1983, micros precipitated the loss of 34,000 jobs or .6 per cent of the total employed work force. PSI researchers cite factors which will influence micros effect on the work force in the future.

Sony with Philips Information Systems, Inc. has announced a common standard for data storage optical discs. Sony is working on a player to use audio and data-storage discs. Possibly by 1986, a single box to play, audio, video and data-storage optical discs may be available to the consumer. Three approaches are being researched by different companies to make optical discs erasable and re-recordable.
