Money, expectations, and the U.S. Civil War
Article Abstract:
Specie price movements of the US paper currency and gold from 1861-1865 were conditioned by the period's prevailing economic, military and political events. Anticipation of future government behavior was particularly related to current currency prices, with war news as a vital indicator of such behavior. Relative paper currency prices were functionally related to parity and exchange rate expectations.
