Article Abstract:
The survey of small business firms by the National Federation of Independent Business in Dec 1998 reveals that most of them believe that 1st qtr 1999 will be a profitable period and that the domestic economy will still be strong despite a tightening labor market. It also indicates that unemployment will rise, but will only slightly affect prices and inflation. About 28% of the respondent firms reported an increase in labor wages, but only 5% reported raising prices.

Some 20% of small businesses are having trouble recruiting qualified staff, while 28% reported higher labour costs for November 1999. The Small Business Optimism Index rose by 2 points in November 1999 to 103.2.

A survey of 2,625 small US businesses during August 2000 found up to 22% planned to take on more employees, while 35% claimed difficulties filling both skilled and unskilled job vacancies.
