Oligopoly in loan and deposit markets: an econometric application to the Netherlands
Article Abstract:
The extent to which the loan and deposit markets in the Netherlands exercise oligopolistic power surpasses theoretical assumptions using the Cournot equilibrium as the basis. Analysis was undertaken using cointegration tests for data covering the period 1957-1990. This significant degree of oligopoly, however, was not a predominant phenomenon since an increase in competitive activity in mortgages was observed. Savings deposits, on the other hand, showed increased market concentration which strengthened the oligopolistic situation.

Social security reform with a focus on the Netherlands
Article Abstract:
Research is presented regarding labor market incentives, and how societies are adapting to the modern trend towards increasing longevity. Countries such as Sweden, the U.S., Italy and Chile, incorporate the adaptation through legislation, whereas the Netherlands is looking at two options: that workers delay the start of pension payements so that they can receive larger amounts on retirement, or that the state pension fund keep a diversified portfolio.
