Poland's new economic strategy 1994-1997
Article Abstract:
Poland has undergone major changes since the revolution carried out by Solidarnosc from 1980-1981 and the 1989 general election when the communist party was defeated. A left-wing coalition achieved power in 1993, and this government is committed to transition and stabilization of the economy. Unemployment is forecast to drop to 14% in 1997, and inflation to fall below 10%. Gross domestic product and labor productivity are also forecast to rise. Poland has also made significant progress in restructuring capacity and resuming growth, though has made less progress than the Czech Republic in control of inflation.

Is economic growth good for the environment?
Article Abstract:
New empirical evidence suggests that economic growth need not harm the environment, although there is some worsening of environmental quality with growth in poor countries, which improves once they become sufficiently rich. However the article suggests that the new empirical evidence has little to say about the issue of whether economic growth is good or bad. The evidence for the inverted-U relationship is weak and the models on which such estimates are based may be inappropriate. The inverted-U relationship with regard to sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide and suspended particulates is discussed.
