Article Abstract:
A survey of small business owners/members of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) indicates the Index of Small Business Optimism in October was unchanged from 96.3 (1986=100) in September. However, the terrorist attacks of September 11 left a high degree of uncertainty in the economy. Plans to hire fell 7% for all firms, marking the lowest level since 1993. Finding qualified labor is the most important problem faced by 15% of all owners. Topics include the optimism index and outlook, earnings, sales, prices, employment, compensation, credit conditions, interest rates, inventories, capital spending, and the most important problem.

A survey of the small business owners/members of the National Federation of Independent Business indicates that the Index of Small Business Optimism rose from 96.3 points in October to 99.4 in November (1986=100). The survey showed that hiring plants rose to a net 11% of all firm and that 18% of all owners reporting that finding qualified labor is the most important problem they face. A survey of small business owners/members from the files of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) indicates the Index of Small Business Optimism fell 5.2 points from 101.5 to 96.3 (1986-100) in September. Nineteen percent reported profits were rising, a decline of six points from August. The statistics discussed and complied also include sales, prices, compensation, credit conditions, interest rates, inventories, capital outlays, and most important problem.
