Reappraising the performance of China's state-owned industrial enterprises, 1980-1996
Article Abstract:
There has been a great deal of debate on the performance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in China. One view is that they have performed so poorly, are such a constraint on economic growth, and so unresponsive to reform that they should be done away with. A review of data on Chinese SOEs shows that their performance is better than many acocunts would lead us to believe. Most large and medium firms (LMEs) in China are SMEs, and they have benefits of economies of scale. There is a need to balance market institutional forms with other forms in Chinese economic development.

Towards a re-interpretation of the economics of feasible socialism
Article Abstract:
The debate on whether socialism is feasible from the perspective of the literature on the division of labour and organizational forms is reexamined. It is seen that each of the major protagonists in the debate provide a partial explanation as to when market socialism, planned socialism and participatory socialism are feasible and the different perspectives on when socialism is feasible can be reconciled.
