Regionalism and the bias against agriculture in less developed countries
Article Abstract:
Regionalism is expected to remain an important part of international economic relations as countries all over the world seek greater access to foreign markets and search for solutions to their economic woes. However, the implications of regional economic cooperation for the agricultural sector and for national welfare in Third World countries are uncertain. Analysis of the impact of trade liberalization among the Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations suggests that regional trade relations will produce modest improvements in agricultural production and exports, as well as in national welfare.

Discovering the truth about protection rackets
Article Abstract:
'Protection' refers to any action taken to artificially bolster the competitiveness of domestic companies against foreign firms. Because 'protection rackets' are often hidden, little information has been generated about their nature and effects. Protection measures are often concealed to avoid any retaliatory actions from other governments, as well as to avoid any conflicts with local consumers and producers in unprotected sectors who bear the cost of subsidies given to protected sectors.
