Rent seeking, protectionism and innovation in the American steel industry

Article Abstract:

Trade protection has negative effects on innovation initiatives, productive performance and industry development. Data on US steelmakers indicate that firms who seek for trade protection are usually less-innovative and less-diversified firms with shareholders, executives and employees with qualifications limited to the industry. Moreover, trade protection force some innovative firms out of the industry because it renders high R & D spending useless and induces stock price reduction.

Corporate dividends are subjected to double taxation in the United States. The way in which this double taxation deters corporate investment and corporate financing decisions is discussed. Strategies to improve corporate governance by reducing empire-building financed by retained earnings are presented.
