Return policies and the optimal level of "hassle."
Article Abstract:
Retailers tend to offer generous return policies when their products' worth cannot be used up for a short span of time and when they can get premium value for the returned goods. Low-hassle policies are likewise tendered when their product lines allow for cross-selling. An analytical model and data culled from retail stores have further established that management-wise, it is advantageous for retailers to vary their policies from product to product according to the level of moral hazard involved.
