The data showed that sales trends continued their favorable run in December 2003 with the seasonally adjusted net percent of owners reporting higher sales rose by one point from November to a net 5 percent of all firms which was the best reading in the past 12 months. The net percent of owners who expected the real sales volume to rise in the next three months gained four points rising to as seasonally adjust 35 percent of all firms.

A modest improvement in sales volume trends is reported in January with a seasonally adjusted minus 9 percent being the net percent of owners reporting higher sales, a two point improvement from December. The unadjusted figures report higher sales by 23 percent of all owners in the three-month period, up four points, while 36 percent reported lower sales, up three points.

The net percent of owners reporting higher sales decreased from 3 percent in August 2003 to minus 1 percent in September 2003. Thirty six percent of retail owners reported higher purchases, while 29 percent reported lower sales.
