Scotch and Chips
Article Abstract:
Demand for computer chips is again strong. National Semiconductor, one of the top four makers of computer chips, is showing profits after two years of losses. It will expand its plant at Greenock, Scotland, where it plans to produce six-inch silicon wafers. The standard wafer sizes are now four and five inches. National will implement a chip-by-chip etching process as a means of cutting costs. Britain's Scottish development agency is subsidizing twenty-five to thirty per cent of National's expansion costs at Greenock. Other National plants will be expanded, and at least two more will be built. National has been involved in expensive court battles recently.

Remote Markets?

Although it has proven a commercial failure to date, five companies have entered bids so far. A market for the Landsat pictures must be established. Farmers, pesticide manufacturers, and commodity brokers are interested in remote-sensing data predicting crop yields. Different companies are utilizing different approaches to retrieve data and expedite its distribution.

Proliferating Down Under
Article Abstract:
Australia will begin mining the world's biggest deposit of uranium. The uranium world market has a larger supply than demand. The Olympic Dam Mine is owned by Western Mining and BP (British Petroleum) Australia. The mine contains, in addition to the uranium deposits, copper, gold, silver, and some rare earths. The Australian Labor Party is opposed to exploiting other mineable uranium deposits. It was the Labor MPs who agreed to the Olympic mining operation.
