Socialist Spain Opens for Business
Article Abstract:
The Socialist government of Spain is opening up its economy to foreign competition. Foreign investors have spent over $2.4 billion in projects. Despite heavy foreign investment, Spanish companies have been spending abroad, particularly in Latin America. Many companies are too much in debt, because of the devaluation of Spanish currency. Unemployment is high, 17.5 per cent in September. Reducing the budget deficit is of significant priority. The government is asking for wage cuts and possibly higher short term unemployment.
