Some implications of AFTA for Thailand: a revealed comparative advantage approach
Article Abstract:
A quantitative assessment of the effects of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Free Trade Area (AFTA) agreement reveals policy implications for its member country Thailand. The revealed comparative advantage approach used for the assessment involves the commodity composition of the country's exports in relation to that of the world. The lowering of trade barriers and increasing competition result in demand for imports and expansion of intra-ASEAN trade. While little room exists for trade creation, investment and economic development can improve in the region.

An examination of ASEAN stock markets: a cointegration approach
Article Abstract:
Stock markets in countries belonging to the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) appear to be linked to each other except for Indonesia. Cointegration analysis gives this conclusion and suggests that ASEAN markets are not efficient for the period studied, from 1987 to 1995. It is still possible to carry out portfolio diversification in an efficient way across ASEAN markets. More research should be carried out into the reasons for this interdependence between ASEAN stock markets.

Are the ASEAN equity markets interdependent?
Article Abstract:
The existence of price linkages among the equity markets of the Assn of Southeast Asian Nation countries, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand is investigated. Results show no long-term price linkages among these markets. However, short-term correlations were observed. These include bi-directional causality between Malaysia and Singapore and uni-directional causality between the Philippines and Singapore.
