The United Kingdom market for sugar confectionery grew 18% by value during 1990-1995, with sales reaching 294,000 tonnes worth 1.4 billion pounds sterling in 1994. Sugar confectionery accounted for 36% of the total confectionery market by volume in 1994. The bubble gum/chewing gum sector grew 92% during 1990-1994, with 37.5% of adults consuming chewing gum in 1994 due to the promoted oral health benefits, compared with 30.3% in 1990. Fifty eight percent of the market by value was accounted for by five multinational firms in 1994. The market is examined.

The UK sugar confectionery market is forecast to increase in value from 1.72 billion pounds sterling in 1998 to 2.18 billion pound sterling by the year 2002. The largest sugar confectionery sector is fruit flavored sweets which increased in value from 377 million pounds sterling in 1998 to 460 million pounds sterling in 1997. The fastest growing sector is chewing gum and bubble gum, which increased by 23% from 1993 to 1997, to 230 million pounds sterling.

Sales of chocolate confectionery in the UK in the period 1990-1994 were not negatively affected by the recession, with sales reaching 515,000 tonnes, at a value of around 3.1 billion pounds sterling, in 1994. Chocolate accounted for 64% by volume and 69% by value of the total confectionery market. Chocolate consumption is closely linked with age, with consumption being highest in the 15-24 age group.
