Issues related to the 1995-1997 Australian Bureau of Statistics' Survey of Employment and Unemployment Patterns (SEUP) are examined, focusing on the benefits the SEUP's longitudinal approach has over cross-sectional data related to one point in time. Topics include data collection methods; survey content, including fixed variables such as date of birth and dynamic variables such as marital status; and applications to public policy.

Hans Singer's model of the severity of recessions

The econometric model developed by Hans Singer, for the measurement of the severity of recessions is described. The examination of the relation between the rate of unemployment of workers and the occurrence of business cycles, for this purpose, is presented.
