The Free Trade Area of the Americas: A Latin American perspective
Article Abstract:
The potential to attain tangible results under the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) initiative is examined. Other major issues investigated include the FTAA negotiating agenda, the major tasks to be achieved by the year 2005, exchange rate stability and the macroeconomic ramifications of intensified economic integration in the Western Hemisphere. The issue of whether a piecemeal approach in monetary integration would be beneficial or not is also studied. Despite challenges presented by negotiating authorities and globalphobic attitudes, it is argued that the FTAA can serve as a platform towards implementing a free trade area in the hemisphere.

Onwards to Singapore: the international contestability of markets and the new trade agenda
Article Abstract:
Among the major policy challenges that result from the globalization of markets is confronting governments with the need to promote competition principles and values on both domestic and international scales. Another challenge is to develop an understanding of the market access concept that is significantly broader than actual applications. The concept of globally contestable markets may be a useful approach in revisiting the core efficiency-enhancing objectives of the multilateral trading system and benchmarking both international regulatory initiatives and domestic public policy actions.
