Whither the Free Trade Area of the Americas?
Article Abstract:
The possibilities of a successful trade agreement among the democratic nations of North and South America and its importance for the US and its Latin American trading partners are evaluated. In Apr 1998, an agreement to launch the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) was launched at the Second Summit of the Americas. A survey of the most recent trade initiatives in the hemisphere indicate that trade has been the basis for a wider relationship between North and South America. The medium-term prospects for the FTAA is assumed to be positive despite the significant economic problems currently affecting Latin America.
