The essence of the megacorporation: shared context, not structural hierarchy
Article Abstract:
Megaorganizations include large companies such as ABB, Asea Brown Boveri. The company has operations in 110 countries world wide. Such large bodies are complex in their internal organization, as is illustrated by the different history of the components of ABB, and their relationship with the center. Companies have to accept market disciplines in the long run, but very large companies are more insulated. The wider role of very large companies should be recognized in economic theory.

The Roman Empire: domination and integration
Article Abstract:
There are parallels to be found between the history of ancient Rome and Europe during the 1990s. There are also major differences such as changes in social hierarchies, which mean that direct lessons cannot easily be extracted from the experience of Rome. Protectionism can affect the coherence of a state, and this is illustrated by the later history of Rome. A new model is needed if we are to benefit from this lesson in Europe.
