The familiar but curious economics of higher education: introduction to a symposium
Article Abstract:
The higher education industry has some 3,600 'firms' with different goals and sizes. Spending on higher education is increasing, and the industry is interesting for economists for a number of reasons. Enrolment has risen to over 14 million students for 1994 from 1.1 million for 1930, while higher education accounted for 2.9% of national income in 1996 compared with 0.6% for 1930. There is a widening income gap between students in private institutions and all students, and this raises the question of whether elite institutions contribute to inequality in the wider society.
