The knowledge driven economy: fact or fantasy?
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government argues that knowledge is an importance resources in helping to boost the performance of the economy. Innovation can help countries retain a high standard of living, it is argued. The government's support for technology has fallen since the 1970s, and there is a case for supplementing this policy with a set of policies that boost growth and production. Demand would be boosted by investment, as would the ability to meet demand. Jobs could also be created for both skilled and unskilled workers.

Article Abstract:
Many nations in the Middle East and North Africa are replacing protectionist economic policies with policies that promote participation in the world economy. These nations have realized that such policies can promote faster economic growth. Egypt has reduced its fiscal deficit from as much as 20% of GDP to about 1%, reducing the country's inflation rate to 5-6%. Information on Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia is included.

The important impediments to adopt the Euro in UK housing and credit markets are observed by the Treasury and some proposals for further investigation and policy options are made.
