Trying to Limit the Damage
Article Abstract:
East German leader, Erich Honecker, appears to favor improving East-West German relations, despite the deployment of new North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) missiles in West Germany. It is reported that Honecker will be seeking a loan from the West Germans, in addition to the 1 billion deutsche mark loan approved in June. West German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, does not have a firm idea of what concessions from the East Germans may be used in loan negotiations. West German political p ositions relating to such a loan are examined.

A Special Corridor
Article Abstract:
The Bavarian premier's visit to East German leader, Erich Honecker, prior to the Leipzig trade fair, marks another step of progress in East-West German relations. Although viewed as a temporary relaxation of policy, the East Germans allowed emigration of 2,600 people last month, four times the 1983 monthly rate. There is speculation that the East Germans are searching for additional bank credits, particularly in West Germany. Honecker will make his first official West German visit this fall.
