Turkey's apparel industry: $6-billion modernization to stay competitive
Article Abstract:
Turkey has poured roughly $6 billion into its apparel industry to stay competitive with other major textile exporters. The bulk of the money was directed at modernizing textile machinery by buying computer-assisted design technology. It is hoped that the increased production facilitated by state-of-the-art equipment will enable Turkey to avoid the feared cumulative effects of more stringent EC import quotas and higher domestic production costs. Turkey also plans to strengthen its market dominance by developing new products and helping former Soviet territories with textile development.
