New Evidence on the Free Banking Era
Article Abstract:
The free banking era in the United States from 1837-1863 is examined to evaluate the results of free competition among banks. Fear of chaos from non-regulation has contributed to the existence of strict bank regulations. Free bank failures were found to be fewer than expected with smaller losses than anticipated. Free banks continued in business longer than believed.
