The UK economy is seeing a recovery in investment in 1995, though consumer spending is weak. Monetary policy aims to control inflation, but there is concern over weak consumer demand. Fiscal policy looks set to be relaxed in 1996 and 1997 due to the imminence of an election. Inflation is rising but prospects for the medium term are optimistic. Exports have helped boost recovery. Unemployment is dropping at a slower rate and employment growth is set to slow in 1996. A recovery in residential property has enede, though some recovery has ended for commercial property.

The prospects for the UK economy are discussed in detail. It is possible that the terrorist attacks in the US could substantially add to public borrowing in the UK. Public sector borrowing is set to stabilize at around 0.5% of GDP, indicating a continuing fall in public sector debt to less than 33% of GDP on the Maastricht measure by 2005.
