Jordan's Aqaba region to become a free zone
Article Abstract:
The Jordanian government has arrived at a pact with three firms from Ireland, the US and Malaysia, to perform a study on converting the port of Aqaba into a free zone. Supporters foresee the free zone as the center for industry, trade and services. Proposals involve a new international airport, railroad, port development and tourist centers. The study, which is expected to be finished by 1998, will provide the Jordanian government a foundation for building a concept for the large-scale project.

Article Abstract:
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) provided Jordan an estimated $220 million of financial assistance. The IMF loan will fund the country's 1999-2001 economic adjustment and structural reform program and help compensate the temporary shortfall in exports of goods and services. IMF has also rescheduled Jordan's Paris Club debt worth about $800 million in interest and loan installments.
