6 billion ... and counting
Article Abstract:
Population growth has become a complex problem, with high levels of fertility in developing countries and declining fertility rates in industrialised countries causing equal concern. If current fertility rates continue for the next 100 years, the population of Pakistan will rise from 130 million in 1995 to 2.2 billion in 2095 while that of Japan will fall from 126 million to 50 million. The next 40 years will see a dramatic increase in labour forces in developing countries where fertility rates are high and a substantial fall in industrial countries where fertility rates are low.
