Unorthodox ... and untenured
Article Abstract:
Despite excellent references from modern South Asia, the Muslim historian Ayesha Jalal has failed to secure a position at the University of Columbia because of alleged discrimination. Jalal's work about the origin of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is extremely sensitive. The Columbia university has declined Jalal's application, even though the history department has twice voted positively for a tenure. Jalal is challenging the university in a law suit.

A class sister act
Article Abstract:
Race, socio-economic class and sex are all important divisions, according to Bell Hooks, English professor at New York's City University. She has been criticised for using vernacular speech, but argues that this is needed to reach her audience. African Americans are more likely to be affected by AIDS, poverty, or be murdered. She resembles radicals from the 1960s with her emphasis on class and rejection of black capitalism as a solution.
