A prescription for a capital's health
Article Abstract:
A few medical schools in London, England, wish to keep their independent status rather than join with the blocs of schools which have grown up as a result of consolidation. The number of medical schools in London has fallen to five in 1999, from 12 in the 1950s. The blocs benefit from being able to attract high quality students and have large research funds. St George's Hospital Medical School has kept its independence and still successfully trains around 1,000 medical students. Some observers point out the specialized hospitals, outside the blocs, will find it harder to merge.

Green menace in a sea of red tape
Article Abstract:
French Biologist Alexandre Meinesz found the authorities in Monaco and France were unwilling to take any action when he notified them of his discovery of the 'Caulerpa taxifolia' alga in the Mediterranean Sea in 1989. Some observers suggested Meinesz was trying to gain additional funding by raising the issue. The alga damages other species of plants. The sea had become infected with the alga when it spreaded throughout aquariums in Europe and eventually it was allowed to pass into the sea. The alga is usually found in the waters of the Caribbean and Pacific Sea.
