A tongue-tied time warp
Article Abstract:
Most European countries have policies which promote the learning of foreign languages, but this does not apply to the UK. The idea of having one language dates back to the nineteenth century and many European countries recognise the use of more than one language within their borders. Language learning promotes other skills such as the ability to compromise and see alternatives. Children should learn two foreign languages in the UK, starting one when they are seven years old and another when they are nine.

Judgement day for dentistry experts
Article Abstract:
The UK Institute of Dental Surgery took an appeal to the High Court over a decision by the Higher Education Funding Council not to divulge reasons for downgrading the institute. The judgement is that reasons should be given for this decision by both individuals and the committee they were part of. Confidentiality in this case protects the individuals involved, and means their judgement is not questioned. There is no legal backing for such confidentiality after the High Court decision.
