Bosses and boffins pact
Article Abstract:
UK research funding is increasingly being geared toward users and research councils become brokers between researchers and users. Social science is important in order to understand how the economy, society and science are linked. The Social Science Research Council has emphasised quantitative research as an approach to fit the social sciences into a changed environment. Research can help the UK to understand export markets and this applies to Latin America and central Asia, which have been little studied.

Compound fractures: student funding for university hospitals is under review
Article Abstract:
Effective medical schools require an wide range of patients to meet student educational needs and for research into common conditions. They also require a combination of scientists, clinicians and professions supplementary to medicine with staff pursuing specialised spectrums of clinical practice. Many university hospitals are located in city centres where operational costs are high and top class recruits are in short supply.
