Skewed selection needs rethink
Article Abstract:
The UK university applications system operates through the Universities and Colleges Applications Scheme (UCAS). Applications are not anonymous, and this could create problems for members of ethnic minorities. Candidates to medical school may be penalised if they make another choice as an insurance in case of rejection by their main choice. The AS level qualification does not appear to enhance the chances of candidates seeking a place at medical school. Changes are needed in the selection process.

NVQ peril for professions
Article Abstract:
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are used in the UK construction industry and could affect the value of other types of qualifications. Level 4 of NVQs are seen as higher than the level of a first degree, while level 5 qualifications are above levels of membership of professions. The building design level 5 is similar to an architects qualification, but has higher status. The Royal Institute of Architects seeks seven years study, while NVQs involve work-based assessment.

Sum mistake?
Article Abstract:
Some observers argue that math standards are falling in the UK. The government argues that grades have risen, while critics counter that it is easier to obtain good grades. Mathematicians are increasingly studying other subjects such as law and economics, which can offer them greater earning power. There is a need for research into improved methods of teaching math in order to increase motivation among students and the number of qualified mathematicians.
