Ad splurge kicks off war to lure top staff

Leading universities in the United Kingdom are investing millions of pounds in academic posts in an attempt to bolster their research strengths ahead of the next research assessment exercise (RAE) in 2007. Four universities - Nottingham University, the University of East Anglia, Sheffield University and Aberdeen University - are in the market for more than 300 senior staff and professors as they attempt to turn success in the last RAE into long-term strategic advances.

RAE fuels trend for research only time

The upcoming 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE) is leading universities to offer new recruits reduced teaching loads and stipulated time to carry out research. Institutions' anxiety for an improved RAE performance is believed to be the reason for the initiative.

Elite stump up millions in hunt for research stars

Aberdeen University's UKPd9 mil campaign to hire over 200 new staff members of "outstanding intellectual quality" is examined. The three-year recruitment campaign was launched with the placement of an advert in The Times Higher in September 2003.
