All research to go online
Article Abstract:
Government-funded researchers in the UK could be required to post their publications online from April 2006 if proposals from Research Councils UK, the umbrella body for all research councils in the UK, are implemented. The plans would mean that as many as 15,000 academics - the number who have council grants at any one time - would have to make sure that a copy of any published journal article is placed in an e-print repository on their university or subject-based website.

Peers to oversee new RAE system
Article Abstract:
It has emerged that the quality of research by academics will continue, in part, to be judged by their peers. The government is due to confirm that it will replace the RAE after 2008 with a system of metrics, but that the system will be overseen by panels of academic experts.
