Article Abstract:
Author and award-winning philosopher Martha Nussbaum will take up a new position at the University of Chicago as professor of law and ethics in 1995 which will represent a dramatic change from her life on the east coast. Nussbaum is widely respected, although her books combining philosophy with literature have met with a mixed response. Her latest work entitled The Therapy of Desire discusses the transformation of socially taught emotions through philosophical argument. Nussbaum's works and conduct of life are examined.

Merger mania hits cash-strapped campuses
Article Abstract:
Higher education in the US is being affected by reduced numbers of student applications and cuts in funding. This may lead to cuts in staffing and more reliance on computer technology as teaching aids. Mergers are seen as one way of combatting the problem, reducing overheads without cutting courses. These amalgamations are not viewed as hostile, and it is estimated that 10-15 colleges annually are merging.

Mary Daly, a lesbian, feminist philospher is, is an associate professor at Boston College. She has a reputation as a radical feminist thinker and her works include The Church and the Second Sex and her autobiography Outercourse. Her second book Beyond God the Father, subtitled Toward a Philosphy of Women's Liberation, became the required text in universities and seminaries throughout America.
